Die alten Römer / The ancient Romans

Heute hat mein Mensch mir die „Villa rustica“ gezeigt, das ist ein ehemaliger römischer Gutshof. Die Mauern wurden 1988 gefunden und bis 1990 ausgegraben und restauriert.

Today my human showed me the „Villa rustica“, which is a former Roman estate. The walls were found in 1988 and excavated and restored until 1990.

Der Gutshof wurde ca. 100 nach Chr. erbaut und danach ein paar Mal erweitert. Es war dann einer der größten römischen Gutshöfe in Baden-Württemberg, bis er ca. 223 nach Chr. durch einen Brand zerstört wurde. Man munkelt, dass die Alemannen daran schuld waren.

The estate was built around 100 AD and then extended a few times. It was then one of the largest Roman estates in Baden-Württemberg until it was destroyed by fire in about 223 AD. Rumor has it that the Alemanni were to blame.

Faszinierend ist, dass es dort damals bereits Fußbodenheizung, einen Heißbaderaum und einen Warmluftraum gab.
Diese Mauer, auf der ich stehe, ist also über 1900 Jahre alt.

Fascinatingly, there was already underfloor heating, a hot bath room and a hot air room there at that time.
So this wall I’m standing on is over 1900 years old.

Und was war das damals? Ein Steinsitz, ein Regal, ein Abstellräumchen…??
And what was it then? A stone seat, a shelf, a storage room…??

Ich habe meinen Menschen gefragt, ob die alten Römer auch Falkner waren.
Sie sagte, dass es in jener Zeit damals die Beizjagd bei den Thrakern gab, davon berichtet zumindest ein Historiker mit dem Namen Plinius aus der Zeit.
Und wer waren diese Thraker?
Ein indoeuropäisches Volk bzw. eine Völkergruppe in der Antike, die als trinkfest und raubeinig beschrieben wurde, vernarrt in Pferde und Waffen. Sie lebten u. a. in einer Region, wo heute Bulgarien ist.
In Bulgarien leben heute auch Sakerfalken! Also kann es sein, dass die Thraker mit meinen Vorfahren auf Beizjagd waren… 🙂 Wow!
Die Römer kannten damals anscheinend keine Beizjagd und keine Falknerei.

I asked my human if the ancient Romans were also falconers.
She said that at that time there was the falconry among the Thracians, at least a historian by the name of Pliny from that time tells about it.
And who were these Thracians?
An Indo-European people or a group of people in antiquity, described as hard-drinking and rough-around-the-edges, fond of horses and weapons. They lived, among others, in a region where Bulgaria is today.
Sakerfalcons also live in Bulgaria today! So it is possible that the Thracians were hunting with my ancestors… 🙂 Wow!
It seems that the Romans didn’t know any falconry at that time.
